TALK | Kader Attia
In the framework of the current exhibition pre-architectures at CIVA, Berlin-based artist Kader Attia presents his contribution Hypomnemata and relates it to the larger context of his work. Hypomnemata explores the connection between colonial knowledge plundering and the exploitative logic of modern capitalism. The title is a Greek word that has been adopted in modern contexts to refer to techniques specifically designed to allow the production and transmission of memory.
Kader Attia is an artist who draws upon the lived experiences of two disparate cultural identities: Algerian and French. In his practice, he investigates the implications of western cultural hegemony and colonial systems of power for non-western subjectivities, focusing particularly on collective trauma and notions of repair. His work has been included in major exhibitions including the Sharjah Biennial 15 (2023); dOCUMENTA 13, Kassel (2012); and the 54th Venice Biennale (2011), among others. Solo exhibitions include: “J’Accuse”, Berlinische Galerie, Berlin (2024), “Remembering the Future”, Kunsthaus Zürich (2020).
